PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADING RUBRIC

Students in physical education will be graded on a numerical basis.  The following rubric will be used as a daily evaluation in determining individual grades:  

Points per day (Example:  21 classes per marking period = 126 points per marking period possible) will be awarded based on class participation, cooperation and sportsmanship, and preparation (proper dress) for class.  The daily point breakdown is:              

1.  Class participation: (4 points possible per day)           

4 points awarded when a student participates fully, enthusiastically and to his/her potential; puts forth his/her best effort.
3 points awarded when a student demonstrates consistent participation, but not to his/her full potential; puts forth good, but not best effort.
2 points awarded when a student participates only for a portion of the class, or does not make an effort to be part of the activity.
1 point awarded when a student puts forth minimum effort.
0 points

awarded when a student does not participate in class activity; no  effort

2.  Cooperation/Sportsmanship: (1 point possible per day)         

1 point awarded for cooperation, appropriate behavior, safe participation and sportsmanship (positive interaction with classmates).
0 points uncooperative behavior or insubordination, unsafe participation, or poor sportsmanship (negative attitude/behavior toward classmates).

3. Preparation: (1 point possible per day) Required for proper hygiene and safe activity           

1 point awarded for changing into appropriate clothing (sneakers, sweatpants,sweatshirt, shorts, t-shirts).
0 points

student does not change clothing.

Medical Excuses:  

1.      Daily – a note from parent or guardian must be given to the school nurse that will accompany a student who is being excused from physical education activity.                 

2.      Long term – a medical note for absences of more than three classes is required.  A medical clearance is also required for the student to re-enter physical education classes.

* A student who is medically excused from physical education class for more than 2 weeks may be given a written assignment in lieu of participation.

Attendance:

Each student in the Croton-Harmon Schools must attend Physical Education classes.  The commissioner's regulation regarding attendance reads as follows:         

“All pupils shall attend and participate in the Physical Education program as approved in the school plan for Physical Education, and as indicated by physicians' examinations, and other tests approved by the Commissioner of Education. Individual medical certificates of limitation must indicate the area of program in which the pupil may participate”.
