PHYSICAL EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY
Physical
education is a vital and integral part of the academic curriculum. It
contributes to the total fitness, growth, and development of the student. By
offering on a continuous basis sequentially designed and developmentally
appropriate movement experiences interwoven with academic learning,
children are challenged to strive for their optimal potential. Every
healthy student is capable of achieving healthy levels of fitness and
wellness, which develop self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-esteem.
As the High School Physical Education faculty,
our major contribution to education, and specifically to the students of
Croton, lies in our commitment to ensure the development of physical fitness
and personal health. Through active participation
in a variety of activities, the student acquires knowledge and skill,
which provide the foundation for a lifelong commitment to physical activity.
We intend to develop students who will exit Croton-Harmon
High School with an improved self-image through various competencies. The “physically educated students” will
show the following desired characteristics and abilities:
- Express
thoughts and feelings confidently
- Demonstrate
a willingness to accept responsibility
- Measure
themselves against measures of quality
- Think
creatively and intelligently
- Value
fair play, honesty, and cooperation
Components of Philosophy
Major Purpose:

extent of the individual's potential ability.
Objectives

Provide for physical growth and development through
which muscular strength, endurance, agility, and flexibility develop.
Increase coordination and balance to help students develop
correct postural habits . Teach students how to rest and relax through
efficiency of movement and development of physical fitness.

Develop such characteristics as courage, initiative,
poise, self-reliance, resourcefulness, and self-control through activities.

and appreciation of the rules, regulations, standards, and history
of sports.

tolerance, leadership, loyalty, honesty, and fair play so that the
student may assume individual and group responsibility in society.
Make
students aware that the body is part of the total self and is a
