The CET Computer Lab, housing both Apple Macintosh and Citrix networks

CET houses two computer networks for students and teachers; Apple Macintosh and Citrix, using Windows programs. The Citrix system uses applications programs directly from the server, deployed to "thin clients" (essentially, "dumb terminals") at the desktop. Students and teachers are able to access their school work and the school's applications programs from the comfort of their home computers, too. Our inventory includes 87 Citrix workstations and approximately 150 Macintosh machines on the Apple network. Students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade use the Citrix machines, and students in 2nd through 4th Grades continue to use the Macintosh computers.

The Computer Lab is located to the right of the school's front entrance, right before the gymnasium. Both Citrix and Macintosh networks run simultaneously in the lab, providing classes for all students in 1st through 4th grades.

Our integrated technology program weaves computers and digital imaging into all the disciplines in ways that will prepare our students for a future in the digital world.

With all our networked computers continuously connected to the Internet, our students have access to, and take full advantage of all the positive aspects of the cyber world. As elementary school students, their Internet activities are closely monitored by teachers, who often plan lessons around Virtual Field Trips! The Croton-Harmon school district employs a strong filter on its web servers, blocking inappropriate material from students in all grades.

1st Grade

  • 1st graders are learning basic computer skills, like becoming familiar with the keyboard and how to use the mouse. Using Kid Pix, Kidspiration and The Graph Club, students create self-portraits and other illustrations, grouping diagrams, illustrated alphabets and pictograms. During the school year, these students will learn tools that are easily translated to many other programs. Students in 1st grade do not routinely use the Internet.

2nd Grade

  • Students in 2nd Grade spend the first part of the year learning keyboard awareness and beginning word processing skills which are integrated into Language Arts projects.
  • As part of their introduction to the Internet, students view a safety video and visit a children's internet safety site.
  • Using new cyber skills, students use the Internet for virtual field trips into the Solar System, the properties of Air, and our local community, complementing units in science and social studies.
  • Students develop map reading and map making skills with Neighborhood Map Machine.

3rd Grade

  • 3rd Grade students divide their technology time between virtual field trips and skill building.
  • Focusing on word processing skills throughout the year, students produce many projects integrated into Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.
  • Students in this grade also learn beginning spreadsheets and electronic graphing skills.
  • The Internet is explored for investigations into sea-life, deserts, the Arctic and butterflies.

4th Grade

  • 4th Graders integrate desktop publishing skills learned during the course of the year, as well as Internet research, into projects on Explorers, Gemstones, Colonial America,The American Revolution and the history of the Erie Canal.
  • Students in 4th Grade also use spreadsheets to demonstrate alternate, electronic ways of displaying and calculating data.
  • Electronic Graphic Organizers are used to synthesize learning.
  • In 4th grade, students are introduced to the multi-media presentation software called Timeliner.
