WELCOME TO UNITED STATES HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT!

Course Information, Expectations and Requirements:

This year we will uncover the history of a great experiment in representative democracy: the United States of America . Our study includes: Constitutional Foundations ; National Unity & Sectionalism ; Expansion , Reconstruction & Industrialization ; the Progressive Movement & Reform ; Prosperity & Depression, War & Peace ; Life in Uncertain Times: From the 50's to the Present .

As Juniors, EXPECTATIONS are HIGH – which means that ALL students must take OWNERSHIP of their work as per the following:

NOTE : All deadlines are FIRM. Barring extenuating circumstances, work is DUE when it's due. If necessary, e-mail assignments to me at: bbowden@croton-harmonschools,org .

HOMEWORK

Simply put, homework is IMPORTANT. It enables you to PREVIEW, REINFORCE and REVIEW the SKILLS and CONTENT you learn in class. You are expected to FULLY complete each HW assignment by the START of the next class (NOT by 3:00 PM!). Incomplete, late or missing HW is UNACCEPTABLE and will lose points. Please Note : If FIVE (5) Homework assignments are late or missing, you may not achieve a grade higher than 80 for that quarter .

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Be pro-active. Come for EXTRA HELP when needed – or if requested by a teacher.

GRADING POLICY

PLEASE NOTE: I do not give grades – my students EARN them.

Extra Credit is neither offered nor necessary because grades are based upon the following assessments:

· Classwork: Preparation & Participation

· Homework: Readings & Assignments

· Exams & Quizzes

· Essays: In-Class & Take-Home

· Socratic Seminars & Scored Discussions

· Project Work

Additionally, a Grade Sheet will be furnished approximately twice a Quarter.

These should be reviewed and signed by parents/guardians.

WRITING, MEDIA AND RESEARCH SKILLS

There is an emphasis on reading and interpreting primary and secondary source materials in this course. Socratic Seminars & Scored Discussions are used to assist students with comprehension and analysis of difficult content – just as Document Skills are utilized to study the relevance of maps, charts, graphs, pictures, political cartoons, etc. on historical events. In addition, contemporary issues and currents events will be discussed throughout the year – which means that students should read the newspaper or watch/listen to the news on a regular basis.

REGENTS EXAMINATION

This year-long survey course culminates with the New York State U. S. History and Government Regents Examination in June – which each student is expected to pass. As such, there will be intensive review in the second half of the Fourth Quarter.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Keep in mind that I want ALL of you to do well. I am one of many academic partners at CHHS who wants to see you achieve your full potential as a student and citizen. Please do not hesitate to approach me after class if you think we need to talk.

While I encourage you to form smaller study groups outside of class to discuss and learn from one another - remember that your personal honor and integrity is always at stake.  Please do all of your OWN work at all times. Cheating and plagiarism (which includes copying Homework) are strictly prohibited .
